An Unsung Hero Kicks Negativity to the Curb
It is not everyday that a special person walks into your life and makes a huge impact on who you are and how you perceive things. In fact, the rarity of this happening is so slim, that when it does happen, special attention must be given to that person. The words “unexpected” and “exciting” are two adjectives that you can use to describe my friendship with this special person who has come into my life. With a description like that, it only makes sense to highlight how truly intriguing and groundbreaking this young woman is.
Sarah Olesnevich is a 21 year old nursing student at Edinboro University. She is currently working on completing her degree and runs a busy schedule, especially due to the fact that she is also working part time at a local Home Depot. “I have a lot that I am working on now,” mentioned Sarah. “However I am so excited to grow and become a nurse. It is such fulfilling work and I know in the end all of the hard times will be worth it.” Her work ethic has carried her through the strenuous nursing program, and she is really involving herself in everything that she is doing.
Getting to know Sarah has opened my eyes and to see just how empowering it is to focus on yourself at such a young age. “I’ve had a lot of time to come to know myself. I feel confident in my decisions and in knowing what I want out of life. No one is going to tell me what to do,” said Sarah. She mentioned that she trained to become a black belt at a young age, because she was being bullied by a young boy in her class. Her parents told her that she did not have to let anyone push her around, and helped her gain the tools in which to overcome the negativity.
In a world where women are constantly being unequally treated, this is so refreshing. Sarah’s outlook on life inspires individuals to want to work harder, better, and to be stronger. She spoke of how she has been through so much, and how it has really contributed to who she is as a person. In high school, she was charged with an underage but has grown so much from her experience and is thriving all while living a very positive life.
Sarah mentioned that in the future she wants to live in North Carolina, on the beach. She has a strong passion for animals and also hopes to volunteer at a sea turtle development center. “I love helping others, including animals,” Sarah said. “I want to help the baby turtles thrive and be able to safely reach the ocean.” Her love of animals was clearly evident by the way she spoke of her dog, Dune. She believes that animals are a great source of therapy, and can help people who are struggling by being a loving companion.
More women need to be trained to think in the way that Sarah does. Her attitude and positivity is infectious, and that is exactly what the world needs more of. She will only continue to grow and share her strengths with others. She will definitely touch many hearts of the people that she comes into contact with, whether through nursing or simply through being a great friend.
