Iskra Lawrence: Giving Up the Pursuit of "Perfection"

Imagine that you have bought tickets to your favorite band's concert. You are beyond excited about seeing them perform, and you know all the words to every song by heart. As you are walking into the concert arena, you see the lead singer walking past signing autographs.

Your heart skips and beat, and you think: "This is my chance!"

The singer comes closer and you move to where you can see them better. They make eye contact with you, walk over, and sign your notepad: "You are incredible, keep on rocking!"

I am lucky enough to have had the chance to meet my idol, Iskra Lawrence. For those of you who do not know, she is a British model who is known for her work with American Eagle Outfitter's Aerie lingerie line. Iskra refuses to have her photos retouched, and is an ambassador for the National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA). You can learn more about her background here.

When I met her a year and a half ago, I realized what my ultimate goals were. My dream is to get into professional modeling, and to be an activist for mental health/self care. Everything that Iskra stands for and practices is what I can only hope to strive for.

I have learned so much from watching this model's example, and she has definitely contributed to the woman I am today. This video is of a TEDx talk where she discusses the importance of loving yourself and pushing past the unrealistic standards that our society places on us to be "perfect".

Her countless projects and campaigns all relate back to her original statement of embracing the real you. This talk specifically highlights the importance of taking care of yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally. She claims that "if we learn self-care and practice self-care, then we can gift self-care to others."

One project of hers that strikes close to home for me is her #IskrasArmy campaign, which introduced self-care education for boys and girls in UK schools.

The impact she has made on me and other young people around the world is astounding! If anything, her efforts have shown me that you are capable of being anything you desire. Being yourself and loving who you are is a large part of her mantra.

My drive and inspiration is largely due to everything that Iskra has worked to share with the world. Everything that Iskra stands for and practices is what I can only hope to strive for.

As we are continuing to grow, learn, and be productive it is always important to remember to take care of ourselves. Iskra makes it a point to let us know that practicing self care is essential to our wellbeing, and I believe that it is time for us to really listen to what she is saying.

People like Iskra are truly revolutionary, and are changing the world for the better. I hope that one day I can make an impact like that!

Until next time,
Anne
